Remembering Carter VanMeeteren
Carter was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare congenital heart condition. By the time he was seven years old, he had already undergone three open-heart surgeries and received a successful heart transplant in June 2020.
According to reporting by The Gazette, Carter was doing well following his transplant when he returned to UIHC in May 2021 for what his family understood to be a routine post-transplant appointment.
During that visit, Carter underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure that included an attempted recanalization of his lower right pulmonary vein.
The procedure resulted in a serious injury. Carter experienced oxygen deprivation and subsequent brain damage. Despite additional medical treatment and efforts to save his life, he died on May 21, 2021.
For Carter’s parents, Nicole and Eric VanMeeteren, no legal proceeding or financial recovery could replace their son.
As Dan Holm Jr. told The Gazette following the settlement:
“I think it’s a fair settlement, but no amount of money would make up for the tragedy endured by this family.”
Understanding What Happened Required a Careful Review of the Medicine
