Driving in the Snow: Easier Said Than Done

You should never assume that driving in the snow is the same as driving in dry conditions. If you take an identical approach, you’re increasing the chance of being part of an accident.

The winter months will bring many changes to your life. One of the most important is an adjustment to how you drive. Here are some top tips for driving safely when the snow begins to fall:

  • Be slow with everything you do. For example, you don’t want to accelerate too quickly, as this can lead you to spin your wheels and lose traction. The same holds true when you need to bring your vehicle to a stop.
  • Take your time. When the conditions are poor, you can’t afford to be in a hurry. The faster you drive the greater chance there is of an accident. It’s best to leave yourself extra time to reach your destination.
  • Don’t stop when driving up a hill. This is a mistake you should try to avoid, if at all possible. If you stop when going up a slope, it may be impossible to start back up.
  • Stay at home if you don’t like what you see. If the conditions are too bad, the best thing you can do is stay at home until the roads clear. This may lead you to change your plans, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

As you’re doing whatever you can to drive safely in the snow, don’t be surprised if you look around and realize that others aren’t taking the same approach. This is a problem for many reasons, including the fact that another driver could cause an accident.

If this happens, move to safety and call 911. You need to receive immediate treatment for any injury, regardless of what it may be.

Once you receive treatment and discuss your long-term outlook with your doctor, turn your attention to the cause of the accident, your legal rights, and the possibility of obtaining compensation from the negligent party. Contact Ball, Kirk & Holm today for immediate help.
